Day 6 – Wednesday 20 September

A Day of Challenges: Old Bridge Strolls, Avoiding hungry deers; using all the types of transportation in and around Hiroshima and Sweet Sixteen Celebrations

Early risers aiming to have a day packed full of adventure on our agenda had a breakfast buffet at our new hotel that serves the region famous dish of OKONOMIYAKI… for breakfast!

Happy birthday sweet Macy

Something special waited Macy at breakfast this morning – a birthday balloons and party candy for Macy. Big smiles and a few tears of joy, upon receiving the present from her family that had been carried and hidden by her friend Matilda; and because it was breakfast we had to wait to sing our hearty Happy Birthday for her at dinner! Happy sweet 16 Miss Macy.

TRAINS, TRAMS, BUSES & A FERRY:

Today we maxed up the use of our public transport systems. The students started out on the highway bus traveling to Iwakuni.

There, spending some time along the river, then we strolled curved picturesque Kintaikyo bridge, a historical gem that has stood the test of time. Saw a gaggle of Edo period costumed actors and crew making a tv drama… ( actually we decided to move off the river bank cause we were in their shot as Mrs S overheard one of their crew say to them go take a break… which they did at the ice cream shop! :(..)

Chilling by the river- movie crew right hand side across the river
Off to work they go…in the heat

But the day held an extra special treat as it was Macy’s sixteenth birthday, and we celebrated with delicious ice creams from the famous ice cream shops next to the bridge and chose from the 100 flavors available a sweet tribute to the special milestone Birthday. Issac had curry; and habanero were tried by Billy and Mr Hannah and while the most popular one that Mrs Burgin needed to order in the fast paced system was the Mona Lisa…chocolate and chocolate pieces and chocolate syrup….while what was thought to be the strangest, Soy Sauce, was enjoyed by Schy!

Built enjoying Habaneros chilled!

Doing a well paced walk to burn off the ice cream calories took the group past some nice old houses with a few boys commenting on the possible age and value of these homes; to a small regional train station; a little tucked away but the students helped find it and rode the one carriage diesel train to a larger station to connect us to the port ferry over to the island.

JOE 2023 – itsukushima

Upon our arrival via ferry, the majestic Floating Torii gate welcomed us with its timeless grace. This beautiful shrine, often referred to as Itsukushima Shrine, seemed to defy gravity as it stood serenely in the tranquil waters. This Shinto shrine building sit over the water and is that most Japanese vermilion hue of a orange red with white trim.

As we explored the island, we encountered its other famous residents – the friendly and free-roaming deer. Their gentle stalking presence as they followed us looking for treats cause a few nervous giggles.

A photo for reference as they wouldn’t stay still!

Students walked through the beautiful shrine taking many photos then enjoyed some shopping; many of the students happily discussed their special gifts they have found for their family members!

As the day draw to a close and as can happen with immersion travel when we allow our interaction and interests of where we are to drive our timetables saw us scrambling to catch a Hiroden back to the hotel for dinner… as well as a few members doing an Amazing Race segment to save a lost camera ( well done to Azra, Christina, Mrs Burgin and Mrs Beckwith) and as is often the case in Japan the lost item was waiting collection right where it was left! Long story short… thanks to incredibly patient and gracious team members we made it back for dinner!

With hearts full of gratitude and memories to cherish, we look forward to tomorrow’s adventure as we board the Shinkansen once more, heading north to Nagoya for a one night stay; getting closer to our sister school friends; many who are following us each day!

As our journey continues and each day brings new discoveries and challenges your children are stepping up, giving things a go and helping each other long the way.

    1. Yeah. It’s been a lot but so worth it and so fun. Sadly no ice cream for me but I had some pretty good Blue Hawaii shaved ice. It’s been a lot of travelling but soooo fun. Heading to the host family which is bound to be great. Keep hearing the tags going off which is pretty funny. Missing you guys, probably wont be able to talk again until Monday because of host family. See you soon 😊.

Most of them are gentlemen cuz they bow to eat (steal) food from tourists.

It’s just the day before you coming to Minokamo. I can’t wait it!!!

    1. Thank you Takagi sensei. So far no one is very sick just the heat has made it difficult some days. We are always thirsty and drinking a lot of Poccori Sweat! We are looked forward to a slower pace of living when we arrive in Minokamo!
